If you can improve a product with little effort and even better, with little money invested, it's a win. Apparently, a mod that was posted last year on YouTube, is gaining some new traction, giving AirPods owners a quick and easy way to improve sound quality for a few dollars.
The mod is done by simply purchasing an earbud cover, placing it over the earbud on the AirPods, and using the headset as is. While this can be done on any pair of earphones, the more elaborate practice that you see in the video is performed so that the sensors can still function on the unit itself.
If you don't want to go through all of the effort before knowing the results, as mentioned before, just simply slide the covers over the earbuds and test them out. If there is an improvement in sound, you know that you're good to move on to the next step.
Next, you simply mark out the sensor locations, remove the covers, heat up a thin metal object, pierce through the marked areas, and reapply the covers to the AirPods. If all went well, you should be able to use the earbuds as normal. Perhaps the best thing about this mod is that the AirPods will still fit inside the charging case. If you are feeling ambitious, you can purchase the covers on Amazon and get to piercing. Good luck!
