With the announcement of the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr, Apple took the opportunity to kill off the iPhone X less than a year after it was released. Since then, though, a growing number of people have complained about "ghost touch" issues that they have experienced their iPhone X on Apple's discussion forums. While the thread started all the way back in December 2017, it seems that the company has finally taken notice.
In an Apple support article spotted online, the Cupertino giant acknowledged two behavioral aspects of the issue as follows:
Apple has determined that some iPhone X displays may experience touch issues due to a component that might fail on the display module. An affected device may exhibit the following:
- The display, or part of the display, does not respond or responds intermittently to touch
- The display reacts even though it was not touched
In what will be good news for iPhone X owners, repairs will be offered free of charge for affected iPhone X handsets via Apple retail stores, authorized service providers, or the Apple Repair Center. However, if the smartphone has sustained other damage that would inhibit successful completion of remedial work, which may include a cracked screen, then those issues would need to be addressed beforehand which may attract a cost. Refunds are also available to those who have previously paid for replacement display modules and believe their iPhone X was impacted by this problem.
In a separate article, Apple has also opened up free servicing for 128GB and 256GB solid-state drives (SSDs) that suffer from "an issue that may result in data loss and failure of the drive". This program specifically targets the 13-inch MacBook Pro (non-Touch Bar) units sold between June 2017 and June 2018 and will require the installation of updated drive firmware and a re-installation of macOS after which you will need to restore your data from backup. While some may be able to put up with the iPhone X ghost touch issue until they can find a convenient time to have their phone serviced, the SSD issue pertaining to the affected model may require urgent attention sooner rather than later in order to avoid more serious data implications.
