We know that ATI announced its chipset line for Pentium 4s and Athlons at CeBIT and boards should be appearing as early as May.
But perhaps less well known is how ATI came to decide on naming its chipset product lines.
The chipsets are called IGP 340, 330 for the Pentium 4s, and 320 for Athlon processors. IGP stands for integrated graphic processor.
ATI called its south bridge IXP and this stands for Integrated Communication Processor. We asked why ATI decided to use 340, 330 and 320 names and we were advised that the ATI CEO who we met at CeBIT likes BMW cars. So the conventions are named after capacities of BMW engines.
It's obvious that ATI 340 "with a four litre engine" stands for the fastest chipset in its chipset product line and that's what ATI hopes will generate the most money.
