After NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB effectively stole the title of fastest consumer level graphics card earlier this week, some ATI video card partners are considering a speed boost for ATI's flagship X1800 XT in order to compete. Targeted speeds could reach 650-675MHz on the graphics core, up from the stock 625MHz, and 1550MHz on the video RAM, up from a stock speed of 1500MHz.
ATI stated that it will more than likely not forbid its partners to increase the clock speeds on its GPUs, but product guidelines give a limit to clock speeds that will be covered under the company's warranty program. As long as clock speeds are kept inside this window, a warranty will be honored.
