Bagle's back

Another new version of Bagle has begun spreading over the internet like wildfire. So far, eight new variants of the virus have been reported - all work in similar ways but have some slight variations.

F-Secure warns that a number of them were spammed out for the first time yesterday. The new versions disable anti-virus software and tries to download some malware to users' PCs - it's not yet clear what form that takes, however.

Messagelabs, meanwhile, said it had detected and blocked some 70,000 copies of the message by yesterday lunchtime. It appears that once it's done trying to download, the virus harvests addresses from a computer and then sends it on to all of them.

It comes as an e-mail with a completely blank subject and message area. The advice, as always, is not to open any attachments you're not expecting.
