Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat - these are just some of the ways that Internet users are currently sharing moments from their lives. While there isn't one correct service to use, there is one thing that these and other social media services have in common. Although we all love to share our lives via our preferred methods, a majority of the available social media services currently allow users to alter, edit and represent themselves in a manner that isn't true to the moment. 'beme' is an app that will attempt to create a more organic experience between users and the audience.
For over a year, a team has been building a new kind of social media app that will attempt to regain what many social apps have lost over time - a more organic means of sharing the experience and yourself. beme's most unique feature is the ability to share by simply pressing the phone to your chest or another surface. beme utilizes the phone's proximity sensor and activates the camera and starts recording when it is covered. By removing the need to interact with a UI, beme allows users to stay engaged in the moment, while sharing it. In its current state, there is no method to preview what you're shooting or to review the footage taken. The clips are automatically uploaded and shared to your friends.
Beme is a social app, so If you want to see what your friends have recorded, you simply scroll through your list of friends and select and hold down on the corresponding cell. The clip will play once and will be removed from the list. There is no way to replay or retrieve the clips after it has been watched. While there isn't a way to "heart" or give "likes" to the video, beme has another unique approach in that if you want to send someone a reaction to the video, you can do so by sending them a selfie. This idea again follows the mantra of bringing a more organic and intimate experience to social.
beme is currently available for download from the iOS App Store. While it is not yet open to the public, the app will allow you to reserve your handle. If you are lucky enough to have a friend who is using beme, they may be able to provide you with an early access code. There is no word on when the app will be available to the general public.
