A few years ago, it almost appeared like Blizzard was stagnating, churning out expansions for World of Warcraft and relying on sequels to its aging IPs like Diablo and StarCraft. But in 2014, the developer stunned the gaming community with its unveiling of an original IP, Overwatch.
Since then, the title has accumulated numerous accolades, including garnering an impressive amount of players in its first month and also taking top honors at The Game Awards. While it would be an understatement to say that the game has been a huge success, it appears that some are curious whether the developer will ever offer a map editor.
Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan was able to chime in on the game's forums and had this to say:
"We are extremely open-minded about releasing a map editor for Overwatch someday. But because Overwatch was made with a brand new engine, this is not a small task or one which can happen any time soon. We have this on our long-term road map and believe heavily in user-made content. But there are many challenges ahead of us and it will be a very long road before our editor can be made available to the public."
While it might happen someday, players shouldn't expect this feature to arrive in the short term. For the time being, users will have to be content with the more recently announced Custom Game mode.
