It appears that Criterion could be working on a new addition to the Burnout franchise, entitled Burnout Crash! What might come as more of a surprise, however, is what the game offers. When Burnout Paradise was offering an entire city (that was then expanded upon with downloadable content), and realistic visuals, it sounds as if the newer title could be taking a completely different route. According to the ESRB rating, the game uses 'cartoony vehicles', and relies on players to complete 'unusual challenges involving tornadoes, space-craft, and lobster monsters'. Yes, really.
At this point, you might imagine that the game could be releasing on Sony's NGP, or Nintendo's 3DS portable consoles. According to the ESRB, it is not releasing on either of the two consoles that might have initially seemed plausible. The game is releasing on both Sony's PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, though the ESRB has not provided any ETA of release. It is possible that information about the game will appear at E3 - but the question it raises is whether the game will appeal to fans of Paradise and the earlier titles, or simply win over a different demographic of buyers.
The ESRB rated the game as 'Everyone 10+', which is the same rating Burnout Paradise received. The rating awarded to Burnout Crash cites 'Cartoon Violence' as its reasoning.
