Whilst many of us are waiting for the first part of The-Lord-of-the-Rings-prequel “The Hobbit” to grace our 48 frames-per-second cinema screens, Microsoft has struck a somewhat surprising advertising deal with Warner Bros.
The Windows Phone 8 campaign will be created by the agency Wunderman, and will feature characters from The Hobbit, although there aren’t any details around which characters and if the actors themselves will be present in the ads. The campaign will include digital, print, and outdoor advertising.
Unfortunately, this deal only extends to the UK, US, France, and Germany, leaving the rest of the world to hunt down the advertisements online (although I’m sure they’ll be easy to find).
This campaign is only one small part of Microsoft’s broader strategy for marketing Windows Phone 8, with a star-studded campaign already underway in some countries. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft ties Middle Earth into the Windows Phone story.
Of course, this isn’t the only Middle-Earth-inspired (and licensed) advertising taking place right now. Air New Zealand also kicked off a campaign recently, using The Hobbit’s New Zealand roots, along with a Peter Jackson cameo, as a safety video and/or parody. You can see that video below.
