One of China's hottest college Internet bulletin boards has been shut down after students posted articles about the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, officials and students said on Wednesday.
The closure of the bulletin board at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in the central city of Wuhan has triggered an angry response from its tens of thousands of college-age users.
Monitors at the State Council, China's cabinet, ordered the instant closure of Baiyun Huanghe bulletin board (bbs.whnet.edu.cn)last week, a Hubei province communications official said on Wednesday.
"Everybody knows universities aren't quiet places, but it's still too sensitive for students to talk about this on the Web,'' the official told Reuters.
University authorities announced on August 31 they were ''temporarily shutting down due to technical problems'' the five-year-old bulletin board, which had 30,000 registered users and perhaps tens of thousands more who were unregistered.
