Corning, known for its glass technology that can be found on a countless array of products, has now introduced the latest version of its glass, Gorilla Glass 6. The company states that its latest creation is the "most durable cover glass to date".
Although Corning has been improving its offerings over the past few years, it has been moving towards making glass that can withstand drops. With Gorilla Glass 6, the firm makes improvements over Gorilla Glass 5, offering not only the ability to withstand higher drops but also to survive multiple incidents.
According to a recent study that Corning has furnished, consumers tend to drop their mobile devices several times a year. Knowing this, Corning developed a new material for Gorilla Glass 6 that can withstand multiple drops, and in lab tests, survived an average of 15 drops from one meter onto a rough surface. Dr. Jaymin Amin, who is the vice president of technology and product development, states that:
“Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be more resistant to damage.”
As you can imagine, this glass can not only be used for the front display but can also be used for the rear as well. Many new handsets offer glass on the rear, not only for style but also for functional purposes like allowing wireless charging. Many complain that this could make the handset more fragile but with Corning's new glass solution, this concern could finally be addressed.
With the announcement, one can only wonder what companies will adopt the technology into their phones over the coming months. Perhaps this is something we will see in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note9.
