Destiny 2's first gameplay reveal took place yesterday, with Bungie unveiling plenty of information about the upcoming game on its live stream. Near the stream's end, a surprise announcement arrived regarding the game's PC version, with Blizzard President Mike Morhaime appearing on screen.
Morhaime announced that Destiny 2's PC version would be exclusively available via the company's Battle.net app. This will be the first game developed by a separate studio to arrive for Battle.net, which has only offered Blizzard-developed games until now.
"As Destiny fans, we were excited to learn that the sequel was coming to PC," said Morhaime in a press release, "We're pleased to support Destiny 2 as the first non-Blizzard game on our platform, and we look forward to joining fellow Guardians in their fight against the Red Legion."
Although entirely skipping Steam was an unanticipated move by the developer, given that both Activision and Blizzard are subsidiaries of parent company Activision Blizzard, the change does make sense.
It will be interesting to see if more Activision games will follow suit, such as the upcoming Call of Duty: WWII, and be made available on Battle.net in the future.
Fans following the game may remember that Bungie announced Destiny 2's launch date to be September 8 on its reveal trailer back in March. However, it seems this release date only applies to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms.
Speaking to PC Gamer, Destiny 2 Director Luke Smith said, "We're not committed to a PC date yet, but at Bungie we're totally committed to making a PC build as great as we can."
As to why, he added, "Our partnership with Blizzard and being on Battle.net, we want to make sure that this version of the game has the time it needs to bake in the oven so it's a delicious piece of bread when it comes out."
It sounds like the series first foray into the PC space will be a delayed one, but fans may agree that it's certainly better than skipping the platform altogether as the original Destiny did.
