Nintendo may have announced plans to release its Wii U game console sometime in 2012 but even company executives have admitted that in terms of hardware performance, the console won't be a huge graphical leap beyond the current generation of consoles in order to keep the price as low as possible. So when will the first true next generation of console hardware be coming out? One game developer, Avalanche Studios, claims it might have the answer to that question.
In a chat on the Edge web site, David Grijns, the head of the developer's newly launched New York City offices, states, "We obviously talk to everybody, and everybody talks to us We have some intelligence to go on that, by early 2014, we're pretty sure there'll be at least one next-generation console on the market." The New York office will in fact be working on a game that is "targeted for release on next-generation platforms in 2014."
However Grijns adds, "When we say 'next-gen' in the press release, it's really a reference to what we think the market will look like then. Anyone who says they know what the market is going to look like three years from now is just blowing smoke. Whatever happens, we feel very confident that we'll be ready for it."
Avalanche Studios is best known for developing the two games in the popular Just Cause open world action game series. It's next game will be a downloadable-only action game, Renegade Ops, that will be released later in 2011.
