Anytime Blizzard updates the Diablo III web site with more info about the long awaited action-RPG sequel people sit up at take notice. The latest update to the site gives some info on a new feature that will be included in the game: runestones. These items are not shiny and pretty rocks but a way for players in Diablo III to customize a character's skills in terms of how they work and even how they look in the game.
Players can look forward to using five different kinds of runestones in the game: Crimson, Indigo, Obsidian, Golden, and Alabaster. According to the site each runestone might affect how a character uses one of his or her skills. It states, "For example, adding a Crimson Runestone to a skill may enhance its damage, while adding an Alabaster Runestone might add a stun effect." There will also be different power levels to each of the runestones that will boost up a character's skills and abilities. The article shows off several videos that showcase how runestones are used in the final game.
Announced nearly three years ago (but in development in some form for years before that), Diablo III remains one of the most anticipated PC games of all time. This year Blizzard announced that it is currently targeting a third quarter 2011 time frame to start the closed beta for Diablo III. Officially the release date for the game is still "when its done" but Blizzard execs have said they would like to see Diablo III released before the end of 2011.
