Seems if you have DirecTV DSL you may be in for a bit of a surprise
Hughes Electronics Corp., the top U.S. satellite television operator, said on Friday it would shut down its loss-making high-speed Internet business, three days after it and rival EchoStar Communications Corp. pulled the plug on their proposed $18 billion merger.
The Internet business, DirecTV Broadband, which operates the DirecTV DSL service, had 160,000 subscribers to its Internet service over telephone lines, but the service was expecting to post a 2002 cash flow deficit of $110 million to $120 million.
"This announcement was long overdue," said Lehman Brothers analyst William Kidd. "We'd like to see some further action on Hughes' other loss-making businesses and some reduced costs out of Hughes corporate overhead."
