IndieGaming has an article that asserts that CD based copy protection not only doesn't really stop piracy but actually helps create new pirates by forcing casual gamers into the realm of warez as they search for ways to get their purchased games to work without a CD in the drive. Once they discover the convenience of not having to pay for games, the game industry loses customers.
The proposed solution is to stop putting out buggy games that are abandoned after a single bug fix patch and abandon the misguided belief that there's a "magic bullet" to thwart piracy (whether that be CD copy protection or Internet activation).
Instead, the article suggests that game developers take on a policy of making it more convenient and tempting to be a customer than a pirate by releasing frequent, meaningful updates to registered users that are convenient to obtain and make having purchased the game worthwihle.
