If you wanted to gauge what most people thought were the most important issues this year, Facebook would be a good place to get that information given the large user base and its popularity among those of all ages. Facebook has recently taken this initiative and found the most popular topics, globally, for the past year.
The list includes the usual suspects such as Brexit – Britain’s exit from the EU – and the presidential election campaign. The full list includes:
- US Presidential Election
- Brazilian Politics
- Pokémon Go
- Black Lives Matter
- Rodrigo Duterte & Philippine Presidential Election
- Olympics
- Brexit
- Super Bowl
- David Bowie
- Muhammad Ali
To measure the top ten moments of the year, Facebook took the frequency that a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January 1st and November 27th 2016. Facebook said that mentions of the topics were analysed in an aggregated, anonymised way and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year. The company also found out the ten most watched live videos too, to do this Facebook simply measured the videos by the total number of cumulative views.
The top ten live videos were:
- Candace Payne, Chewbacca Mom
- Ted Yoder, Soundscapes
- Buzzfeed, Countdown to the next presidential election
- Atlanta Buzz, People are lining up to hug police officers in Dallas
- NBC News, Election results
- Under the Hood, Video of a truck completely carved out of wood
- Viral Thread, Population count from US to CA
- CNN, Election results on Empire State building
- Dena Blizzard, Pokemon Go for moms “Chardonnay Go”
- Super Deluxe, Election map
