One of the most popular fantasy franchises is being turned into a free-to-play MMO. Bigpoint has announced it will launch Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms, based on the fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire from author George R.R. Martin and the current hit HBO TV series.
The official web site for the game has already launched and the first trailer will be shown during next week's San Diego Comic-Con event. Bigpoint said that the game will be developed using the Unity engine. The Artplant development team, who previously worked with Bigpoint on Battlestar Galactica Online, will help to create the Game of Thrones MMO. Closed beta testing is scheduled to begin later this year.
Bigpoint says of the game itself:
Game of Thrones Seven Kingdoms begins after the deaths of King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. The Starks of the north declare war on the south and Baratheon’s two brothers both make claims to the throne. Players are challenged to form alliances through Player vs. Player (PvP), Siege combat and politics to control Westeros.
Cyanide Studio has already released two games based on the fantasy series. The first, A Game of Thrones - Genesis, was a PC exclusive turn-based strategy game that came out in 2011. Earlier this year, the same studio released a single player role playing game based on Game of Thrones for the PC and consoles.
