GamersFirst, who acquired the failed first person shooter MMO All Points Bulletin and is now turning it into a free-to-play game, is doing the same thing for another well established MMO title. Today's press release announces that GamersFirst has bought the rights to Fallen Earth, the post-apocalyptic RPG MMO from developer Fallen Earth, LLC. The press release states that Fallen Earth's current development team which now numbers just 12 people will join GamersFirst's internal development team at Reloaded Productions.
GamersFirst will soon turn Fallen Earth into a game that can be played for free but will still have the option of a monthly subscription fee. The game's current subscribers will receive "significant rewards" if they decide to stick with the game through its transition period which is expected to end during the fourth quarter of 2011. Those rewards will include "lifetime upgrades to a premium tier membership for the price of an existing subscription."
Launched in September 2009, Fallen Earth takes place in and around the Grand Canyon region of the US after an apocalyptic event in the future. The game had a solid cult following but could not muster up enough monthly subscriptions. The game's developer started mass layoffs of its staff in 2010.
GamersFirst, which runs a number of free-to-play games such as the first person shooter War Rock and others, bought the rights to All Points Bulletin after that MMO was shut down and its developer Realtime Worlds closed its doors. For the past several months the new development team has been revamping the game, now called APB Reloaded. It is currently in open beta and will officially launch later in 2011.
