The Coalition is preparing a premium expansion to Gears 5, bringing the first add-on that will expand on the story campaign. Titled Hivebusters, the newly announced expansion is launching on December 15, and in addition to being available as a paid piece of content, it will also be a part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription at launch.
Hivebusters explores the story behind the Hivebuster program, which has so far been a part of Gears 5 as its Escape multiplayer mode. The three-hour-long story content will follow Lahni, Keegan, and Mac's "Scorpio Squad" as they tackle a suicide mission to destroy a Swarm Hive in Galangi islands.
Three player co-op play, online or split-screen, will be available, and for the first time, Ultimate Abilities from multiplayer are coming as a feature to the campaign. Xbox Series X|S enhancements like fast load times, quick resume, VRR, and 4K HDR visuals, as well as 16 new achievements are included in the package too.
The Hivebusters expansion launches December 15 on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Android via cloud gaming. As mentioned previously, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will be getting the expansion for free on day one across all those platforms. Gears 5 owners and standard Xbox Game Pass subscribers who are keen on jumping in can now pre-purchase Hivebusters for $19.99 on the Microsoft Store and Steam.
Moreover, Microsoft will begin offering a new Gears 5: Game of the Year Edition next week for $59.99, which will include the base game, the Hivebusters expansion, Halo: Reach Character Pack, and 30 days of boost.
