Fans of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise have been on pins and needles for the past few months. The reason is that plans for a full fledged sequel to the post-apocalyptic first person shooter have been up in the air due to GSC GameWorld's financial issues. Now it looks like all hope for a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has come and gone.
However, a group of now former GSC team members have now dusted themselves off and announced they have formed a new game studio, Vostok Games. The company, after an abortive attempt at acquiring the rights to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R franchise, has already announced plans for its first game, a free-to-play MMOFPS titled Survarium. The game sounds very much like the previous S.T.A.L.K.E.R. titles but taken to a new level.
Survarium's premise is that it takes place in the near future as players will have to deal with "a mass- scale ecological catastrophe on Earth, the reasons behind vaguely known." Project Lead Ruslan Didenko calls it a "a next evolution step for the idea of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. we’ve been working on for the last ten years."
The game is a PC exclusive and is due out by the end of 2013. In the meantime you can check out the first developer diary video from Vostok Games below.
