High Dynamic Range (HDR) content has been around for quite some time, but the technology is now being made more openly available to consumers with reasonably priced displays, consoles, and more services supporting the format. Now, Google has announced that the Play Movies & TV service will offer a selection of content in HDR on supported devices.
Google follows its competitors like Amazon and Netflix, which have also slowly adopted the format and offered content over the past couple of years. If unfamiliar with HDR, compared to normal video content, the format offers visuals that "pop" looking more vibrant and offering more depth in the darker spaces. In order to experience it, you will need a TV or monitor that supports HDR, along with an HDR compatible output device like a PC or Chromecast Ultra.
Google stated that HDR will be available in the United States and Canada first and should land in other regions within the coming months. While there are only a handful of titles available currently, it is certainly a good first step for the platform.
