Long delays have apparently not dented the retail performance of Half-Life 2. Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that Half-Life 2 has sold through 1.7 million units in the 2 months since it has been released at retail. Obviously dedicated fans waited and waited for the game, even during the delays. That the game has sold this well bodes well for VU Games and of course Valve Software for the upcoming year. The original Half-Life sold very well for several years after it was released. Half-Life 2 sales have been particularly strong outside the United States in European territories such as the UK, Germany and France.
Sales figures for Half-Life 2 over the much talked about Steam network are not available. Valve and VU Games are still in a legal dispute over Steam. Many developers, publishers and retailers are looking to find out just how well Half-Life 2 did on Steam sales wise. Steam is a daring experiment in online distribution and many are wondering how well it really worked, and if it is a viable platform for future releases.
