Facebook-owned Oculus launched the standalone VR headset, Oculus Quest, as well as the Rift S almost one year ago, on May 21. To celebrate that launch, the company has shared some news regarding its VR ecosystem, including the general availability of hand tracking in the Oculus Quest.
Hand tracking allows users to interact with the virtual world using nothing but their hands, removing the need for the company's Touch Controllers. The feature was first announced at last year's Oculus Connect event, and then made available as an experimental feature toward the end of the year. With an update rolling out to the Oculus Quest this week, the feature will be part of the general release. What's more, developers can submit third-party apps to the Oculus Store starting May 28.
There are already a handful of experiences on the way with support for hand-tracking, including Elixir, a title which lets players mix potions, cast spells, and so on; The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets, another game where players work to solve the mystery of - you guessed it - stolen pets: and Waltz of the Wizard, a title focused on experiencing what it would be like to use magic.
Oculus also announced a handful of other features and updates. Starting this week, it will begin testing the ability for users to post to Facebook Groups using their Oculus usernames. To help with productivity during this time, apps like Immersed and Spatial are also coming to the Oculus Store to enable better collaboration. Finally, Oculus is also making improvements to the Guardian system, with a new Playspace Scan feature to detect objects around you.
As a way of saying thank you, Oculus will also be hosting a special sale on the Oculus Store for both Rift and Quest users. It will start on May 21, with no end date being mentioned.
