The Graphics Interchange Format: we all know it, and we all love it. There's no better way to store your tacky memes and silly sprites than as a GIF (okay, other stuff, too, but who cares about that?), and the internet just wouldn't be the same without them. Chances are you can't remember a time when the web was without it, and it turns 25 today.
From Hamster Dance and the horror days of Geocities to Nyan Cat, GIFs have left their mark on the net, and don't show any signs of slowing down. How many other technologies from 1987 can you say that about? Windows 2? Macintosh II? Right – not many.
In honor of this fine occasion (and since we felt like this article was too short without it), we decided to put together a gallery of what we feel are some of the web's finest GIFs below. Just don't look at it if you're prone to seizures. Seriously.
Obviously we didn't get everything in there, but if you can think of something in particular we might've missed, feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
