In a surprise announcement, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment unveiled Hogwarts Legacy today during the Sony PlayStation 5 Showcase. Catch the announcement trailer above, which give glimpses at environments like Hogwarts, combat, enemies, and more.
The game has been part of leaks and reports since 2018, and in 2021, players will finally be able to take a trip to Hogwarts and become a full-fledged Wizard or Witch. The title is described as an open-world action RPG, and promises to include locations both familiar and new to the franchise.
The storyline takes place in the 1800s, making it a prequel to Harry Potter's adventures in the late 90s. Here's how the Warner Bros.-owned developer Avalanche Software - not to be confused with Just Cause maker Avalanche Studios - describes the game's setting:
Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. You have received a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic. Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic.
Hogwarts Legacy will be available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. The game does not have a specific release date attached to it yet and will arrive sometime in 2021.
