Yet another game publisher has admitted to being the subject of recent cyber attacks. This time it's S2 Games who developed and published the multiplayer fantasy action-RTS game Heroes of Newerth. Ripten reports that it has received confirmation from S2 Games about the attacks which have been going on for the past week.
According to the story, " ... there’s a small group of players based out of England and Croatia who run a hacking / scamming ring that sells hacks mainly for FPS games." This group has apparently set their sights on Heroes of Newerth and found a way to crash the game's servers via an exploit. However the story adds that when developer S2 Games banned the accounts of these hackers they continued their attacks using hacked accounts and new ones bought with stolen credit cards. When these hackers were banned again they launched a Denial of Service attack against the Heroes of Newerth servers and keeping legitimate players from loging on.
S2 Games now says that they have solved most of the problems with the DoS attacks but the hackers are now moving their attacks to the game's message boards and forcing the shutdown of the game's forums. The article states that S2 Games have spent a lot of time and money fighting off this hack group; money that they don't likely have a lot of due to S2 Games being a small indie game developer. In the meantime the company has been giving players some compensation such as in-game cash due to the attacks.
