As promised, Guerrilla Games showed off Horizon Forbidden West's gameplay for the first time today. The State of Play had footage captured on the PlayStation 5 as the developer used a short 14-minute rescue mission to highlight the flashy visuals, combat moves, returning and new foes, and more. The full reveal can be seen above.
The mission has Aloy pursuing a group of raiders from the Tenakth tribe who has taken an ally, Erend, seen in the first game hostage. The gorgeous jungle, underwater environments, the Shieldwing (Aloy's new glider), as well as machine and human foes all get close-ups in the trailer. The finale is a frantic boss fight against a machine elephant (Tremortusk) that has a Lord of the Rings style mount on top to hold multiple bow-wielding enemies.
Here's how the developer describes the upcoming entry's setting:
Horizon Forbidden West continues six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy, a machine hunter, has travelled west to investigate a mysterious and deadly blight. In these uncharted lands, she will meet strange new tribes and encounter ever more deadly machines. Together with old friends and new companions, she must brave this dangerous frontier to find the answers she needs to save life on Earth.
Horizon Forbidden West will be launching on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, the game does not have a firm release date yet. Although in the original announcement last year Sony said the game is targeting a 2021 launch, it's unclear if this is still the plan.
