HP's Windows 10 Mobile flagship device, the Elite x3, will be receiving a retail-focused accessory in the form of a mobile barcode scanner. The phone and the scanner attachment come as part of a specialized bundle.
Billed as the 'HP Elite x3 Mobile Retail Solution', the bundle appears under the company's 6" mobile solution section. Clicking through leads you to a quick overview of the phone's specs and other capabilities, one of which is the barcode scanner itself. The interface between the scanner and the phone is described as "full speed USB between HP Elite x3 and Elite x3 Barcode Scanner & Jacket through Pogo Pins". In terms of its decoding capabilities, the accessory will be able to handle standard 1D, PDF, 2D, and Postal symbologies.
With this addition, HP intends to convey the seamless experience that the device provides. As the company puts it:
Enable optimal customer experiences, associate productivity, and manager agility with the HP Elite x3 Mobile Retail Solution, a Windows® handheld and barcode scanner that switches to a full PC.
HP has been particularly great at providing updates for the phone, with a firmware update as recent as last week that considerably improved its overall performance. The business-centric push for the phone has always been one of its alluring features for the enterprise. However, that hasn't stopped the company from trying to persuade hardcore fans of the platform to jump onboard with discounted bundles including its handset.
HP workspace was another concept that filled the chasm that Continuum has attempted to address, albeit imperfectly, as our very own Rich Woods noted in his review. In a similar vein, this handheld integrated scanner could pique business users' interest.
