Thanks creamhackered...Hewlett-Packard Co.HPQ.N and America Online on Wednesday announced an agreement that aims to increase the use of AOL Instant Messenger, or AIM, in large businesses. AOL is the Internet unit of AOL Time Warner AOL.N , the world's largest media company. Under a distribution and development agreement, Hewlett-Packard, one of the world's top computer and printer makers, will integrate AIM instant messaging services into its own messaging portfolio. Instant messaging enables computer users to send text messages to each other in real-time This is the latest effort by AOL to introduce its instant messaging product to the business market, which it first began targeting in November.
The company, which pioneered the instant messaging craze among consumers, is girding for battle with rival instant messaging systems offered by Microsoft Corp. MSFT.O and International Business Machines Corp. IBM.N Microsoft is gearing up to offer a company enterprise version of its MSN Messenger later this year while IBM is pushing its FaceTime messaging system to the tens of millions of users of its Lotus Notes group communication system.
Yahoo and various independent players such as PalTalk and Trillium are also in the market. Financial news and information group Reuters Group Plc RTR.L offers a version of Microsoft's messaging system targeted at global financial markets.
