HTC announced its U Ultra handset nearly two months ago and at the time stated that a variant utilizing sapphire glass would also launch sometime in the future. After revealing its price in late January, the sapphire model now appears to be making its retail debut in Taiwan in the form of a pre-order.
The U Ultra Sapphire Edition will arrive to market at a price of NT$28,900, or if we go by current conversion rates, around $950 USD. While a majority of the internals will be the same as the original model, HTC will double the amount of its internal storage to 128GB. Although the use of sapphire in mobile products has been touted for the past few years, a majority of companies simply haven't shifted their products to support the material, mainly due to the high cost and the difficulty that comes from manufacturing it.
Naturally, if you aren't keen on spending nearly $1000 on HTC's latest device, you can always opt for the standard model that will set you back $749 in the US.
