Huawei today announced its 2018 smartphone sales, saying that it sold an all-time high of over 200 million units. The firm has shown consistent growth, shipping 153 million units in 2017 and 139 million units in 2016.
Of the company's premium lineups from this year, the P20 series sold 16 million units, and the newer Mate 20 series has already sold five million units. Huawei said that its Nova 3 is the most popular selfie phone of 2018, and the series as a whole accounted for 65 million units. While the press release did talk about Honor, it did not say how many of the devices sold were from the subbrand.
Huawei also noted that in the second and third quarters of this year, it was the second-largest smartphone seller globally, overtaking Apple and sitting behind Samsung. The firm boasts going from "being dismissed as a statistical 'Other' to ranking among the top 3 players in the world."
Indeed, back in 2010 when it was getting started, the company sold three million units. That was followed by 20 million in 2011, 32 million in 2012, 52 million in 2013, 75 million in 2014, 108 million in 2015, and so on. Huawei says that 500 million people are using its smartphones in over 170 countries globally.
