With the next major update for the Windows Phone OS, currently known as Mango, almost upon us, attention is increasingly focused upon the next generation of hardware that will be powered by the enhanced mobile operating system. The first Windows Phone 7.5 handset, Fujitsu-Toshiba’s IS12T, went on sale last week in Japan, and HTC is widely expected to announce its new Windows Phones at events in multiple cities tomorrow.
But perhaps the most eagerly anticipated new Windows Phone devices will be those emblazoned with a Nokia logo. Ever since the partnership between Nokia and Microsoft was first announced, there’s been considerable excitement over the pairing of Nokia’s hardware with the Windows Phone operating system. We’ve seen a brief flash of Nokia’s first WP7 handset from the company’s CEO, Stephen Elop, but the new hardware isn’t expected to be officially announced until the Nokia World 2011 event in October.
However, an anonymous tipster sent an image to WMPowerUser, which shows a handset dubbed the Nokia 703. The image was allegedly captured from a presentation document prepared for network operators, and reveals some details about its specification, in addition to showing off the form factor, which closely mirrors that of Nokia’s MeeGo-based handset, the N9.

According to the slide, the 703 has a 3.7” WVGA (480x800px) LCD, in a form factor that’s 12.3mm thick and weighs 114g. Its slim body houses a 5MP camera capable of 720p recording, along with 8GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. Expect NFC on board as well, given Nokia’s recent confirmation that all of its future handsets will include this feature.
This fairly unremarkable set of specs suggests that the 703 may be a mid-range device, rather than a flagship model. The Nokia 703 showed up on the “I’m A WP7” app a couple of days ago, as revealed by WPcentral; a Nokia 800 has also been tracked by the app, and this may (hopefully) prove to be a higher-end handset than the 703.
