NeatherRealm Studios has revealed several details regarding its upcoming game, Injustice 2, which is a sequel to 2013's popular title, Injustice. While the new gear system, characters and their special moves were already shown off at E3 2016, the company has now also stated that the game will adopt a "more aggressive" approach with regards to downloadable content (DLC).
Ed Boon, creative director at NeatherRealm Studios, has stated that:
One of the things we’ve been doing, trying to do more and more with every game [...] is to support it for a longer period of time. With DLC characters, we’ve had four with Mortal Kombat, six with Injustice, eight with Mortal Kombat X, and with Injustice 2 we plan on continuing that pattern.
He went on to say that Injustice 2 will undoubtedly feature a more aggressive approach to DLC, which will not only be confined to new characters, but also to the game's gear system.
The gear system in Injustice 2 allows players to customize their characters, something that wasn't present in the original game. However, Boon states that the company is considering pay-to-unlock models for it too, since many players won't be looking to spend an extensive amount of time in unlocking everything. He stated that:
We have ideas in our head of the things we’d like to consider but certainly haven’t like nailed down this is going to be the way to do it. Ideally to me the whole purpose of this feature is customization, longevity and ongoing molding of your character so to speak.
With regards to his aforementioned statement about players possibly not being interested in investing a large amount of time in the game, Boon has also stated that NeatherRealm Studios is looking to "cast the biggest net possible to get as many players into it as possible".
Injustice 2 will be arriving on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2017, however, a release window for a PC version of the game, if any, has not yet been announced.
