Interview: Starship Troopers

For those who have read Robert Heinlein excellent book Starship Troopers Empire Interactive is going to make your day. The crew over at UGO got a great interview out of a Senior Executive Producer with Empire. Definitely worth checking out if you like the book, and of course like playing video games.

UGO: Tell us about Starship Troopers.

Empire: It's coming out for PC and Xbox in about a year's time. The game is set fifty years after the film, on a mining planet overrun by bugs. [The planet] stopped sending messages to Earth and we sent a task force there to investigate. Players control a Special Forces character that gets thrown straight into the action on each level.

The first level is based on the Whiskey Outpost scene from the movie [where a flying bug decapitates a sentry]. That scene has memorable moments we wanted to recreate. There are fourteen different kind of bugs, twelve different kinds of weapons. Players don't run out of ammunition so there are no melee weapons. You can carry four guns at once, and there are mission objectives where players are inserted or have to race for a dropship to be picked up. We have Vietnam-type scenes where the dropship files over the terrain and players have to shoot out from the side of the door to defend the ship. Or, as you're flying in, you might have to take out a few plasma bugs [the giant anti-aircraft bugs].
