The loss of 2,332 laptop computers, microcomputers and micro servers by the Internal Revenue Service over a three-year period has ranking Senate Finance Committee member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) demanding a harder look at funding for the agency.
In a letter to the director of the federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Grassley cites a Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) report.
He writes that the loss of more than 2,300 computers "highlights for me what I believe is the trend at the IRS: historical poor management of money and personnel that justifies the administration scrutinizing the recent unquestioned budget increases given to the IRS year-in and year-out."
IRS spokeswoman Nancy Mathis told NewsFactor that nearly 1,600 of the missing computers have been found, blaming accounting issues for the lost machines.
"It's not like they were lost or stolen," she said.
