Yesterday, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, with all-new cameras, dust- and water-resistance, and without a dedicated headphone port. But perhaps the biggest surprise of the event was the revelation that Nintendo is bringing a new Super Mario game to iOS.
Super Mario Run is - as its name suggests - a game in which the titular character runs and jumps across the screen collecting coins. Its announcement was rather unexpected, given Nintendo's resistance to bringing its most beloved gaming property to mobile devices in recent years.
But if you were left frustrated by the prospect that the new game would only be available on iOS, there's good news. Nintendo told Kotaku: "We do intend to release the game on Android devices at some point in the future." Shigeru Miyamoto himself suggested the game may be exclusive to iOS for a limited period of time before heading to Android devices, when he said on stage it would come to iOS "first".
Clearly, there's not much specificity to go on there. Nintendo said that Super Mario Run will be coming to iOS later this year, but its arrival on Android appears to be a bit more open-ended.
Still, it's reassuring for Android owners to know that they'll be able to enjoy some mobile Mario action... eventually.
