After a record two and a half months, EA has finally replaced Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge with a new title now offered for free via Origin and its "On the House" program.
On The House is similar to Microsoft's Games with Gold program in that games are offered for free for a limited time. The main difference is that Games with Gold offers a new free game roughly once a fortnight for Xbox 360 and Xbox One whilst PC games offered on Origin have been refreshed, in most instances, once every six weeks. Also, unlike Games with Gold, EA does not publicize when the free offer will be replaced by another game.
The latest game offered for free on Origin is Jade Empire: Special Edition, originally released back in 2007 for PC, as a revision to the original Xbox 360 game. The game was developed by BioWare and published by EA in 2005 with the Special Edition being released on Steam in 2007. Despite widespread criticism for being a short game, it has received mainly positive reviews with GameSpot and IGN rating the game 8.4 and 8.6 out of 10 respectively.
Prior to its replacement, Yuri's Revenge had been the longest offered free game on Origin topping 75 days with "Zuma's Revenge", "Ultima 8: Gold Edition" and "Amazing Adventures: The Caribbean Secret" all tying in second place at 70 days each. At the other extreme, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and Theme Hospital have been offered for free for as little as a day each, earlier this year.
In any instance, it can't hurt to grab a free game but don't wait too long as it could unexpectedly disappear!
