Superdata just released its report for the first half of 2017, giving us some insights into the games industry and how it evolves over time. Although the report did not reveal anything truly surprising, it is still interesting to see how players on console and PC decide to spend their time and money.
According to the report, League of Legends grabbed the number one spot, as the biggest game by revenue to date. Popular games on PC heavily skew towards the free-to-play model, with the games being funded largely by micro-transactions. On the console side, FIFA 17 grabbed the top honors in this category, with Overwatch being the only game that showed up in the top ten on both PC and console platforms. Grand Theft Auto V was the second most popular game on consoles, which is in itself impressive for a game that launched back in 2013.

6 | World of Tanks | Call of Duty: Black Ops III |
7 | DOTA 2 | Destiny |
8 | Overwatch | Madden NFL 17 |
9 | Counter-Strike: Global Offensive | NBA 2K17 |

The research group did not reveal detailed revenue amounts for each title, but noted that total revenue spent on 'interactive media' for the year will amount to an estimated $105 billion; which will be up 12% from the same period last year. Beyond that, VR software revenue will surpass that of its hardware, reaching an estimated $28.3 billion by the year 2020. VR has had quite an interesting start so far, with Sony's PlayStation VR headset selling one million units since its launch. On the other hand, Oculus recently cut the price of its headset bundle to $399, albeit temporarily, matching the price of its Sony competitor to some degree.
Gender equity amongst players improved as well, nearly reaching a 1:1 ratio so far this year. According to the report, female gamers grabbed a 46% share, giving developers more incentive to create more gaming experiences catering to that demographic.
