Lyft announced today that it is adding Venmo as a payment option for riders in the U.S. The new payment method will roll out in the next few weeks, allowing riders to split the cost of their rides, assuming it's safe already to share trips with others.
To use Venmo for your next Lyft payment, you need to install the latest versions of both apps on your phone and sign in to your accounts. You will then need to link your Lyft and Venmo accounts. Once that is done, open your Lyft app, tap on the Payment section in the menu, and then add Venmo as a payment option.
You can split a fare with your friends by finding the transaction in Venmo after your ride and then selecting the rider who shares the cost of your trip. Alternatively, you can look for it in your Venmo notifications in order to directly view that transaction.
Lyft will also let you use Venmo to pay for bike and scooter rides as well. The service already offers PayPal and credit or debit cards as a payment method, and the addition of Venmo should be a welcome change.
