It took quite some time for Nintendo to release Mario Kart Tour after its initial announcement last year, but as promised in August, the game is now available on Android and iOS. Mario Kart Tour is a free-to-play game and it marks the franchise's debut on smartphones.
The title features tracks and characters that are already well-known in the series, but it stands out from other games thanks to the addition of tracks inspired by real-world locations. These tracks show up temporarily during special events. As usual in games in the series, more characters and vehicles can be unlocked by playing the game.
The controls have been adapted to mobile devices, letting users play with the phone in portrait orientation and using simple touch controls to drive their car.
While the game is free-to-play, Nintendo has now announced one of its monetization strategies for Mario Kart Tour. Players can buy a Gold Pass subscription, which grants them three benefits. First, they'll be able to play in 200cc, the highest speed setting in the game. Additionally, they can get extra rewards from races and participate in Gold Challenges, which can earn them stickers for their profile. The subscription costs $4.99/month, but there's a two-week free trial available.
You can download Mario Kart Tour from the Play Store on Android and the App Store on iOS. You can learn more about the Gold Pass here.
