It's been some time since Nintendo originally announced that Mario Kart would be coming to smartphones in the form of Mario Kart Tour. The title was initially planned for a release before the end of March, 2019, but earlier this year it ended up being pushed back to be released in the summer. Now, it looks like the game will miss that time frame by just a few days.
Nintendo has launched an official Twitter page for the game, and with it came the announcement that the title will be available to play on September 25 on both Android and iOS. You can pre-register to play it through the App Store or the Google Play Store right now.
Nintendo has also kicked off the game's official website, which finally sheds some light on how the game will work. Controls will be significantly simplified compared to traditional Mario Kart games, as you'd expect, and players will race through both iconic tracks in the franchise, but also courses inspired by real-life locations around the world, such as Paris. It also seems that racing is about more than finishing in first place, with players being encouraged to use items to achieve a high score.
Mario Kart Tour will feature a collection of characters, karts, and gliders that can be unlocked through gameplay, though it's unclear how microtransactions will be implemented in the title. Characters may also get different outfits inspired by the same real-life locations as the tracks in the game.
With less than one month to go until the official launch, Nintendo recommends that you follow the title's Twitter account for more news as the release gets closer. You can also check out the official website for more information. It's worth noting that you'll need a Nintendo Account to play the game, though you'll probably already have one if you own a Nintendo Switch or have played the company's mobile titles before.
