Canadian developer Piranha Games has revealed the launch trailer for the latest entry in the classic vehicular combat series, MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. You can see it above.
For those not familiar, MechWarrior is a combat game in the BattleTech universe, which as the name implies, involves mechs. It was originally developed by Dynamix and published by Activision for DOS in 1989, the Sharp X68000 in 1992, and finally PC in 1993. Although it had a number of developers over the years - the second one for example, being both developed and published by Activision -, the rights for the franchise eventually ended up in the hands of Piranha Games, the same studio behind MechWarrior: Online.
Developed in the Unreal Engine, this latest installment is set in the year 3015, during the Third Succession War - which means the events take place before those of the first MechWarrior. You will be piloting, as ever, "hulking machines of war", known as BattleMechs, in either single-player or multiplayer configurations. The game also supports up to four-player PvE co-op.
Upon release, modders will be able to download the editor, however mod support in the game itself will arrive in "early 2020", which is also when the Epic Games Store plans to add this feature.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries comes in either a standard or deluxe edition, with the former setting you back €40.99 (around $45), and the latter coming in at €48.99 (about $54). It will launch on December 10, as an exclusive to the Epic Games Store for one year, with other storefronts planned after the exclusivity period. No other platforms have been announced currently.
The game can be pre-ordered now at this link.
