In August, Microsoft announced the 40 finalists of its annual Dream.Build.Play game development competition. This week, the winners of the competition to find the best upcoming Xbox 360 and Windows Phone games from independent developers were announced.
In the Xbox 360 game category, the winner was the imaginatively named One Finger Death Punch from developer Silver Dollar Games. The side scrolling action game takes its inspiration from martial arts films. The game lets players unlock 21 different skills and combine them for use in lots of different fighting combos. Silver Dollar Games will get $40,000 for their efforts.
The grand prize winner in the Windows Phone game category is Smirkers, from developer Kenneth Bugeja. This casual game has a pretty simple premise; you have to make circles with faces that may be a bit moody happy again. The site says, "To play, fire green smirkers to collide with yellow and red ones to change their color." Bugeja will get $20,000 as his grand prize for winning the category.
In addition to the money, the winners all receive a free Windows Phone device and a chance to have their games signed up by Microsoft for a publishing contract in their respective platforms.
