Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that it will be carbon negative by 2030 in order to play its role in the protection of the environment. At its Inspire 2020 conference today, the tech giant announced five new sustainability initiatives in order to quicken its progress towards this goal.
For starters, a new coalition dubbed Transform to Net Zero will focus on the sharing of information regarding business transformations that help reduce carbon emissions. Partners of this coalition will also be looking to invest in carbon-reduction technologies. Moving on, a new Sustainability Calculator will be provided to cloud customers, so that they can get a detailed look into their scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions.
Microsoft has also announced that its datacenters will be diesel-free by the turn of the decade, enabling it to reduce its scope 1 emissions. Notably, the tech giant worked with electricity retailer Vattenfall last year to develop advanced, sustainable datacenters in Sweden. The Climate Innovation Fund, which was unveiled in January, is going to be making its first investment in a climate solution.
Finally, the details of Microsoft's new supplier code of conduct sustainability requirements are being shared. Suppliers will be reporting their scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, simultaneously working with Microsoft reduce them as per the Redmond giant's set out goals.
