Microsoft has announced HoloLens 2 Industrial Edition, building off of the success from the HoloLens 2 headset with companies like Lockheed Martin, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and Mercedes-Benz USA. As it has been doing since it introduced the original HoloLens back in 2016, it's listening to companies' feedback on what they want from the untethered holographic PC.
One thing that companies have been asking for is a HoloLens headset that can be used in regulated environments, and that's where the Industrial Edition comes in. For example, in semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries, devices need to meet particle emission requirements.
The HoloLens 2 Industrial Edition meets a few new standards. It's ISO 14644-1 Class 5-8 rated for clean rooms, and for intrinsic safety, it's rated UL Class I, Division 2. It also has a new Rapid Replacement Program, meaning that if your unit becomes defective, a replacement can be overnighted to you before the faulty one is received by Microsoft. The warranty is also longer at two years instead of one year.
Other than that, it's the same as the regular HoloLens 2, so you can do the same things with it that you do outside of the regulated environment. It supports the same apps, and they'll work the same way.
The HoloLens 2 Industrial Edition is available for pre-order now for $4,950, and it will begin shipping this spring. You can learn more here.
