The past week for Microsoft has been full of various figures and to bring you up to speed, we have combined several of the bits of news in to one post. Everything from Satya Nadella's pay revealed to how much money Microsoft has given back to the community has been announced so far this week.
0.99
First up, Microsoft has launched a new Music Deals app for Windows 8 and 8.1 in the US. On each Tuesday from now through the end of the year, there will be one “Top 5” new album every week from Xbox Music for $0.99, and there is also access to 100 top and themed albums for $1.99. For the music enthusiasts out there, this will be a cheap way to get content without breaking your bank.
You can download the app right now for Windows and Windows Phone.
84.3
Thanks to a regulatory filing this week, we know that Satya Nadella will earn 84.3 million dollars this year for his work as the CEO of Microsoft. It is worth pointing out that most of his earnings come in the form of stock but the breakdown is below:
- A base salary of $918,917.
- He was awarded a cash bonus of $3.6 million.
- $59.2 million in stock that will vest 2019.
- A $13.5 million stock award given to him in August 2013 that was related to the CEO search process.
When you add it all up, that's a lot of cheddar for being the CEO of Microsoft. But, when your company makes billions of dollars each quarter, and attracting and retaining top talent is key to your future success, many will argue that this pay is worth it as long as the stock price keeps going up.
10,000 & 1,200,000
Yesterday, Nadella took to the stage in San Francisco where he talked about the company's Azure platform and the momentum behind the product. Part of that conversation highlighted the fact that there are 10,000 new Azure customers added each week and they have created 1,200,000 SQL databases.
Microsoft also showed their commitment to Linux with the announcement that CoreOS is now available; the company also said that 20% of deployments on Azure are now based on Linux.
1,000,000,000
Also announced this week is Microsoft's commitment to giving back to the community. The company posted their 2014 Citizenship report including that, for the first time, their total giving has surpassed $1,000,000,000.
Highlights from this report include the following, as noted by Microsoft:
- Microsoft advanced its three-year commitment to create opportunities for 300 million youth by 2015 under the Microsoft YouthSpark has created education, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for 227 million youth since launch, including 124 million in fiscal year 2014.
- Microsoft expanded its work to help nonprofits do more good with technology by donating software and hardware to more than 86,000 nonprofits around the globe. This includes the donation of Office 365 Nonprofits to 11,500 nonprofits in 74 countries.
- For the third year in a row, Microsoft employees and its company match program contributed more than $100 million to nonprofits worldwide.
- Microsoft took new steps to meet our longstanding commitment to ensuring the privacy and security of our customers’ data, including expanding our use of encryption across our services, providing choice and transparency on data location, and strengthening legal protections for customers’ privacy.
- Microsoft built on our industry-leading carbon neutrality program with expanded investments in renewable energy to power our cloud services by purchasing more than three billion kilowatt hours of green power, equal to 100 percent of our global electricity use.
Microsoft has always been committed to giving back and these figures highlight that fact. With over 1 billion given back to the community through various mediums, Microsoft is committed to supporting the community that has helped make it such a huge success over its lifetime.
