Microsoft is reportedly planning to introduce a browser-based app that will directly bring xCloud game streaming to iOS next year. This was allegedly confirmed by Microsoft's gaming head Phil Spencer at an internal meeting with employees.
Business Insider was the first to report about Microsoft's plans, citing sources familiar with the matter. If the report turns out to be true, it will give the Redmond-based company a workaround on Apple's strict rules regarding cloud gaming on the App Store since regular games must be submitted and reviewed individually by Apple.
Microsoft said in August that it was rolling out cloud gaming as part of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on September 15, but only for Android users, and it did launch it with over 150 games. After the announcement, the preview program on iOS devices was shut down mainly because Apple had a blanket ban around game streaming via the App Store at that time.
At an all-hands meeting with employees on Wednesday, Spencer reportedly said: "We absolutely will end up on iOS". Microsoft is said to be looking for ways to bring Game Pass to iPhone and iPad devices through the web browser. It's interesting to see how Apple will react to Microsoft's plans, assuming they materialize in 2021.
