Yesterday we reported that Google Chrome Canary is allowing PWAs to show shortcut menus for the pinned websites. Now, Microsoft has updated Edge Canary (via Techdows) to add the feature to the web browser.
The feature allows users to access a set of options when they right-click on a pinned PWA. Currently, the ability to access shortcut menu is hidden behind a flag. If you are interested in trying out the feature and then you can follow the steps below to enable the flag:
- Open Microsoft Edge and type "edge://flags/#enable-desktop-pwas-app-icon-shortcuts-menu" (without quotes) in the address bar.
- Click on the drop-down menu and select Enable.
- Restart the browser to apply the changes.
Once done, the feature should be active and you can pin any PWA to see it in action. If you don't use a PWA that currently supports shortcuts then you can head to Sadchonks demo website to try out the feature.
The ability to access shortcut menu should contribute to the push towards the adoption of PWAs. Google is one of the companies that's leading the charge and the company recently started offering the web app versions of some of its own apps in the Play Store. Unfortunately, the feature is currently restricted to Microsoft Edge Canary version 84.0.513.0 or later. We expect Microsoft to roll this feature out to the other Insider channels soon.
