It's been three and a half months since Microsoft announced Lumia Denim, the latest firmware update for its smartphones, which includes the newest version of its mobile OS, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1. In early September, Microsoft told Neowin and other publications at a media event in London that, in the UK at least, the rollout of Lumia Denim would be complete for all devices before Christmas.
Now, a week before Christmas, it's clear that things aren't quite going to plan, in the UK or anywhere else. But despite evidently being delayed, the Denim update actually began to roll out unannounced this week - first in China, with many other markets and devices following soon afterwards.
Today, Microsoft made it official, in a post on its Lumia Conversations blog, in which it confirmed that the rollout has begun.
"The Lumia Denim update has started rolling out to a limited number of devices in selected markets," Microsoft said, "and will continue arriving in waves by device. A wider rollout of Lumia Denim to all Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to begin in early January, following partner testing and approvals."
The last five words of that quote will surely send shivers down the spine of many Lumia owners awaiting the update, as carriers are notorious for dragging their feet when it comes to rolling out updates to end users.
We're looking at you, Verizon.
